DARA’s surprise win in Vienna gave Bulgaria its first Eurovision crown after a high-energy performance that worked with both juries and viewers.

Bulgaria won Eurovision for the first time with DARA’s “Bangaranga,” turning the 2026 contest into a historic night for the country. The grand final took place in Vienna, where DARA finished with 516 points and beat 24 other finalists to win the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.
DARA was not widely seen as the obvious favorite before the final, but “Bangaranga” worked when the final arrived. Eurovision’s official results showed Bulgaria winning both sides of the vote, with 204 jury points and 312 televote points.
DARA turned a surprise run into a Eurovision moment
“Bangaranga” worked because it felt immediate. The performance had the rhythm, staging, and confidence Eurovision needs on a final night, while giving Bulgaria a clean emotional hook: a country winning the contest for the first time.

That is what made the result bigger than a scoreboard update. Bulgaria joined Eurovision in 2005 and had come close before, but this was its first-ever victory. Eurovision’s official report also noted that DARA became Bulgaria’s first Eurovision winner on the contest’s 70th anniversary.
The night belonged to DARA because the result felt both unexpected and complete.
The final was not all celebration
Eurovision 2026 also carried tension over Israel’s participation. Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Slovenia boycotted the contest, while Israel finished second behind Bulgaria.
That gave the final a complicated backdrop. Eurovision still delivered the spectacle, but the politics around the event were impossible to ignore.
Still, the clearest image from the night was DARA standing at the center of Eurovision’s biggest stage with Bulgaria’s first trophy.
Bulgaria gets its Eurovision crown
For Bulgaria, this was more than one strong performance. A song that was not the obvious favorite became the one both juries and viewers chose.
That is why “Bangaranga” now has a place in Eurovision history. It gave Bulgaria its first win, turned DARA into the face of Vienna 2026, and made the final feel surprising in the way Eurovision does best.
DARA gave Bulgaria its first Eurovision crown, and “Bangaranga” became the song that defined the night.
