Half Man Holds Its Violence

Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell in Half Man locked in a tense and intimate embrace
A bond built on closeness, pressure, and something harder to define.

A new HBO limited series from Richard Gadd explores a decades-long bond where closeness slowly turns into instability, and silence becomes the real trigger.

The Half Man HBO trailer does not show you the moment everything breaks.

And then there are stories that make you feel it was already breaking long before.

Half Man, the new limited series from Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd, leans into that second feeling. The first trailer does not offer clear answers. But something in it feels unsettled from the start.

And that feeling does not leave.

The Half Man HBO Trailer Begins With a Reunion That Doesn’t Sit Right

At the center of Half Man are Niall and Ruben, played by Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell. They are not brothers by blood, but they have shared a connection that has shaped most of their lives.

That history should create ease.

Instead, it creates tension.

When Niall appears at Ruben’s wedding after years apart, the moment feels off before anything is said clearly. His presence shifts the atmosphere. The balance between them no longer feels stable.

The series description points toward an eventual “explosion of violence.”
But the trailer chooses not to show it.

It lets the possibility sit there instead.

Time Doesn’t Distance What It Carries

Half Man moves between the 1980s and the present, tracing a relationship across decades. The timeline does not explain what changed.

It lets small details accumulate.

Moments repeat. Expressions linger. Certain tensions never fully settle.
The past does not stay in the past. It stays close.

And the longer it stays, the harder it becomes to ignore.

Where Closeness Starts to Shift

What makes the series feel different is how it treats connection.

There is familiarity. There is history. But there is also something harder to name.
A sense that closeness does not always mean stability.

Some relationships hold more than they show.

And sometimes, what they hold is not meant to stay contained.

A Cast That Keeps the Focus Tight

Alongside Gadd and Bell, the series features Stuart Campbell, Neve McIntosh, Marianne McIvor, Bilal Hasna, Amy Manson, and Anjli Mohindra.

The world around the central relationship expands.

But the gravity does not shift.

Everything still seems to move around the same emotional center.

Why It Feels Different

The trailer does not rely on big reveals or dramatic turns.

It builds tension through pauses, through glances, through the absence of clear explanations. The discomfort comes from what is not fully said.

That restraint reflects Richard Gadd’s approach to storytelling.

The less it explains, the more it stays with you.

Release Timing and Platform

The six-episode limited series premieres April 23 on HBO and HBO Max. It will also be available in the U.K. on BBC iPlayer starting April 24.

It is a contained story, designed to unfold as a complete arc.

Which makes every moment feel placed with intention.

A Story That Stays Just Under the Surface

Half Man does not push its central moment to the front.

It lets it remain in the background, shaping everything around it.

And in doing so, it shifts the focus away from what will happen…
to what already feels like it has been building, quietly and without release.

That tension is what lingers.
