Sabine Marcelis Brings Shade to Coachella

A new inflatable installation at Coachella 2026 turns desert color, shelter, and slow movement into part of the festival experience.

Sabine Marcelis Coachella maze redefines what a festival installation does, shifting it away from a visual landmark into something people actively use throughout the day.

Set within the Coachella Valley grounds, Maze unfolds as a soft, inflated structure in gradients of yellow, orange, and deep red. Its form draws from the surrounding mountain ranges without copying them, creating a space that feels enclosed but never heavy.

It doesn’t pull attention. It absorbs it.

A space shaped by light, not structure

Instead of building a fixed canopy, Marcelis lets the maze walls create shade. As the sun moves, the shaded areas shift with it, forming temporary pockets where people naturally slow down.

Benches in matching tones appear along the edges and inside the curves, but they never define how the space should be used.

There’s no clear instruction inside Maze, and that’s exactly why it works.

By night, the installation changes again. Light embedded within the inflatable walls begins to glow, softening the structure and turning the maze into a more immersive environment. The same paths remain, but the experience becomes quieter and more internal.

Not a landmark, but a reset

Maze doesn’t try to compete with the festival around it. It sits just outside that intensity.

From inside, the main stages are still visible at certain points. Sound carries through. People drift in, pause, and leave without needing to stay.

It becomes useful without asking for attention.

The project took close to a year to complete, moving from early site research into production and final installation just before opening. The lighting was finalized at the last moment, shaped directly by the changing desert light rather than fixed in advance.

Marcelis has been clear that Maze is not designed as an image-first installation. It resists being reduced to a backdrop, even in a setting where most large-scale works are quickly turned into content.

In a festival built on constant motion, Maze introduces something rare: a place that lets people stop without stepping away.
